In the Academy award winning movie from 1976, All the President’s Men, there is a famous quote by the character Deep Throat where he says, “Just…follow the money.”  The implication was that when the money trail was followed, whoever was responsible for the conspiracy would be found.  Jesus once made a statement about money which has a surprising similarity.  He said, “Where your money is there your heart will be also.”  The implication from Jesus’ statement is that following the money trail in any person’s life will reveal what is the core passion of their heart.  This is a statement of truth.  It is not a statement of hope.  If we only hope, as Christ followers, that our money trail is bringing honor and glory to God, then we don’t really understand the reality of how money reveals what is hidden in our hearts.  The only question that we have to answer is if we are willing to look objectively at what our money trail is revealing about the things we value.

So what does this have to do with prayer?  Scripture shows us that where the Holy Spirit is moving in the lives of people there will be a commitment to and a passion for truth.  Truth does not simply refer to objective statements that we make about God.  Truth is the uncovered reality that drives our existence.  If we are to follow where the wind of the Spirit is blowing, we must be willing to follow the money.  In other words, we must be committed to letting the Spirit reveal the truth of our lives to us and also be committed to letting the Spirit to do all of the remodeling work that He wants.  Everyone who makes a commitment to Christ starts out with the intention of allowing the Lord to do this work of transformation.  However, there are few who stay the course and keep on the narrow path.  Jesus said, “Many are called but few are chosen.”  He said, “Broad is way to destruction and many find it, but narrow is the way that leads to life, and few find it.”  What kind of person are you?  If you want to be one of those who find life, then your path begins with a commitment to the truth.  Jesus is the “way and the truth and the life”.  If you want him, then you want the truth wherever it leads.

Prayer Point

How do you pray?

From my experience in leading people in prayer for the past 20 years, I would say that the majority of people lack confidence in how to pray.  The scriptures give us clear teaching about prayer; however, prayer is not something that is learned only by studying about it.  Prayer is learned by doing.  My encouragement to you is to apply these principles in your times of personal and group prayer.  The Lord will meet you as you diligently seek Him.
