Friday Update – May 18, 2012
The fresh new life of Spring flowers and plants has arrived along with newness of life in our church family. We have new babies, new families joining together in marriage, new graduates, and new life in Christ that we will celebrate in baptism. Along with the joy of new life comes the excitement of change! How will we embrace these changes? Sometimes the changes leave a vacancy in our hearts because the new opportunities mean that friends or family members will be leaving. Other changes impact us in the opposite way. Little ones have a way of filling up our lives, sometimes to the point of feeling too full. In all these things we can give thanks to our heavenly Father who created our lives to change. May we look for God’s continuing purpose in our lives as we encounter all that is new.

The Word for this Week
The desire for recognition, popularity, and notoriety from people can be a “slippery-slop” that can lead us to being at odds with God. This very thing happened to the first king of Israel, and His story reminds us that the battle is always for our mind. Following the period of the time when Israel had judges who governed them, God’s people wanted to be like the neighboring countries that had kings. And though God Himself was their King, that wasn’t good enough, so they clamored for an earthly king (see 1Kgs. 8:1-5). They wanted someone “larger than life,” with an impressive appearance and a charismatic personality. So God reluctantly granted their persistent request. Read more online
